Comparing development efficiency of instructions using 2 methods: Illustrated text vs. 3D animation. I believe 3D is more efficient and less subject to design variables that adversely affect conventional instructions. The proof is in any example of today's consumer instructions.

A discovery that right-handed people need right-handed media (camera angle from left), raising the question: "Are most animators the left-handed, creative types?" I've found it quite difficult to break this habit - do you have this problem as a developer. Do you notice this as an end user?

Over the years, instructions seem to be getting more difficult to follow while the impact of this poor quality (External COPQ) is rarely isolated to the instructions. Lean manufacturing does not stop at the shipping dock, it continues into millions of homes by untrained assemblers, and their skill level is eroding. Visual instructions in manufacting is on the rise (especially for Aviation and Automotive Industries), so why is it ignored for the consumer? With the cost of visual instructions dropping, combined with mobile connectivity, I predict a paradigm shift and a new focus on "Lean Instructions."
